Vejlø Island is the largest privately owned island in Nakskov Fjord. It is still farmed as it was 50 years ago, sheltered by many hedges and orchards. Vejlø is probably best known for its island camps, which have now taken place every summer since 1971.

On Vejlø there is a special atmosphere where one feels set far back in time and some tractor enthusiasts may find the island particularly interesting as many of the island's old tractors and other machinery are standing around, in some cases where they last broke down.

Bird Island of the Fjord

Vejlø can justifiably be called the fjord's bird island, as the careful farming and grazing are of great benefit to the water birds. At the same time, the owners ensure that there are no foxes on the island. Nordenden, which has some very interesting beach meadows, is a breeding ground for hundreds of water birds. Disturbance should of course be avoided, but from the small dyke south of the beach meadows many of the birds can be observed from a good distance. April - June are good months. You can usually see knob-billed swans, greylag geese, wigeons, mallards, pochards, coots, great black-backed gulls, herring gulls, hooded gulls, common terns, common pochards, lapwings and kites breeding at this site.

Access to Vejlø can be arranged with the Post Boat skipper.

Show special consideration to residents and birds and note that traffic on the north end is prohibited from 15 March to 15 July.
